flask

flask
   1. an old name for a bottle, now specialized to mean a narrow, flattened container for alcoholic beverages. Such flasks come in various sizes, often holding around 6 U.S. fluid ounces or 180 milliliters. The word is very old, appearing as flaska in Old High German and as flascon in Latin.
   2. a commercial unit of weight formerly used to measure liquid mercury (or quicksilver, as it was called). The flask was equal to 76.5 pounds avoirdupois, which is equivalent to almost exactly 34.7 kilograms.
