gross ton

gross ton
(GT)
the name "gross ton" is used in at least two ways: (1) as another name for the British Imperial or long ton of 2240 pounds (see ton1), and (2) as another name for the register ton, a unit of volume equal to 100 cubic feet (see ton3), in describing the entire interior volume of a ship as opposed to the cargo-carrying capacity. To avoid confusion, it is better to use "long ton" for use (1) and "gross register ton" for use (2).
