net ton

net ton
(NT)
the name "net ton" is used in at least two ways: (1) as another name for the U.S. or short ton of 2000 pounds (see ton1), and (2) as another name for the register ton, a unit of volume equal to 100 cubic feet (see ton3), in describing the cargo-carrying capacity of a ship as opposed to the entire interior volume. To avoid confusion, it is better to use "short ton" for use (1) and "net register ton" for use (2).
