- nu
- a measure of the dispersiveness (or constringence, as it is called) of a lens or prism. If b, y, and r are the indices of refraction at blue, yellow, and red wavelengths, respectively, then the nu value is (y - 1)/(b - r). The measure is represented by the Greek letter nu, and sometimes the symbol "nu" is used as if it were a unit, as in 65 nu.
